Acadian Ridge Trail
The Acadian Ridge Trail is located in the northern section of Mount Desert Island near the Kitteridge Brook Forest. As far as I can tell, the trail is on private, conserved property maintained by Maine Coast Heritage Trust and Friends of Acadia. Janice and I walked the path one-way and wandered back to our car, past the festive sculpture, along Norway Drive. The person who told me about this
Fall on Mount Desert Island 2016
This fall on Mount Desert Island has been especially beautiful. The colors have been spectacular and the weather mild. The campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor was the perfect place to capture the changing of the seasons. I shot all but the last three of these photos in the college garden using a Canon 5D Mark III DSLR and a Canon 135mm f/2 lens wide open. For the rest I
Duck Brook Motor Road Bridge
The largest bridge that you’ve probably never seen on Mount Desert Island is the Duck Brook Motor Road Bridge pictured below. Ironically, anyone who drives the Park Loop Road, starting from the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, travels over the bridge (located here), but few people see the bridge itself. That’s too bad since it is by far the longest and tallest bridge in the park. In fact, it’s
Acadia Senior College – Geology
One of the best things about living on MDI is being able to take courses at Acadia Senior College. This fall, Duane and Ruth Braun taught The Geology of Mount Desert Island. The format for this seven session class was one hour of lecture followed by a field trip. On these educational and fun outings we visited Seawall, Big Rocks, Cadillac Mountain, the Shore Path in Bar Harbor, Otter
The Tarn
The Tarn is a small lake in Acadia National Park located between Dorr Mountain and Huguenot Head, a shoulder of Champlain Mountain. In his wonderful book Lakes & Ponds of Mt. Desert, William Newlin notes that The Tarn “has become so overgrown with rushes and lilies in recent years as to barely rate the status of lake” not to mention that it’s only eight acres in size. While not a body of
Common Ground Country Fair
The 39th annual Common Ground Country Fair was held September 25-27 in Unity, Maine. Janice and I attended on Friday and Saturday, our first time ever. Two full days was just about enough time to see everything that was happening on the 40+ acre fair grounds. Some 60,000 people take part in the fair which celebrates rural and sustainable living in Maine. The photos here give just a taste
Sunbeam Trip to Frenchboro, Maine
The tiny village of Frenchboro is located on Long Island, eight miles southeast of Bass Harbor, Maine. The 2,500 acre island is just two miles long by a mile and a half across at its widest point. Today I traveled to Frenchboro on the Sunbeam V, a 75 foot vessel operated by the Maine Sea Coast Mission. The journey was a field trip for an Acadia Senior College class I have been taking
Worldwide Photowalk
Today members of the MDI Photo Club and other New England photographers gathered for the seventh Annual Worldwide Photowalk™. Taking place in cities around the world, photographers of all walks of life and skill levels got together to socialize, share and inspire during this one-day, worldwide event. Howie Motenko of Acadia Photo Safari was the leader for the MDI walk. He took our group
Fall on Mount Desert Island
Our first fall on Mount Desert Island has been beautiful. The autumn color has lasted for weeks, and there’s still plenty to enjoy. On Friday and Saturday we toured the island and I captured the images on this page using the Canon 5D3 with 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. My new iPhone 5S has served well as an always-at-hand camera, but it can’t compete with the big (and very heavy) full-frame Canon
Moose Island
Today we had a rare opportunity to visit a private island. The MDI Photo Club arranged the trip by getting permission from the land owners who were kind enough to let us photograph their property. Janice and I, along with our daughter Emma who was home for the long Columbus Day weekend, met the club on the western shore of Mount Desert Island (MDI) about two hours before low tide and waited
