St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church
St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church in Bar Harbor, Maine is the oldest, largest and tallest public building on Mt. Desert Island. Both the Church and the Rectory are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The interior of the church is graced by twelve windows designed by the Tiffany Studio, installed between 1886 and 1907, as well as eighteen other stained glass windows by
View from Harbor House
This is a view I’ve seen countless times en route to my spinning class while thinking to myself “I wish I had my camera with me.” I shot it from the second floor of the Harbor House standing on a chair and holding the camera over my head to get to the upper window pane where there was no screen installed. This Southwest Harbor scene is looking south and the buildings from
Shore Cottage
Here are some shots of a lovely home on Somes Sound here on Mount Desert Island. I took these with a Fuji XT-3 and a manual-focus Rokinon 12mm lens. The trick to taking these kinds of architectural interiors is to make sure that the camera is both level and plumb to ensure that vertical lines in the scene remain vertical in the photograph. With the camera plumb, you may find that you are
La Rochelle
La Rochelle is a beautiful and elaborate “cottage” on West Street in Bar Harbor. Built in 1902 for George S. Bowdoin, a great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton and a partner in the Morgan Bank, the mansion was named after the Bowdoin family’s ancestral town in France. The most recent owners, Ruth and Tristram Colket, donated the structure to the Maine Sea Coast Mission in 1972
The Callender House and Highseas
Architect Fred Savage of Mount Desert Island designed The Callender House (large image below) and Highseas. Today the Jackson Lab owns these former homes, both located on the Schooner Head Road just outside of Bar Harbor. The JAX allowed the MDI Photo Club to photograph both structures for our March outing. The Callender House (1901) was the first summer cottage built of brick in Bar
Ellsworth, Maine
The city of Ellsworth is the county seat of Hancock County, Maine. Incorporated as a town in 1800, and as a city in 1869, it has a very interesting history. I took the pictures below in a one hour period today from 3:30 to 4:30 PM. Yes, it gets dark early here in December.
I set up all three shots on a tripod and shot with a Canon 5D Mark III DSLR and a Canon 24mm tilt/shift
Duck Brook Motor Road Bridge
The largest bridge that you’ve probably never seen on Mount Desert Island is the Duck Brook Motor Road Bridge pictured below. Ironically, anyone who drives the Park Loop Road, starting from the Hulls Cove Visitor Center, travels over the bridge (located here), but few people see the bridge itself. That’s too bad since it is by far the longest and tallest bridge in the park. In fact, it’s
Bass Harbor Head Light
The lighthouse in Bass Harbor, Maine is one of the most photographed features on Mount Desert Island. Most images are of the lighthouse itself, taken from the shore below, but today I’m sharing a few that I shot from vantage points where few people are allowed to stand. Once or twice a year, the United States Coast Guard opens this historic site to the public for a few hours. The photos
