Southwest Harbor February 2017

Mother nature came with a vengeance this week delivering back to back storms and blizzard conditions. Up until a few days ago, it had snowed only once and just a few inches. My snowshoes felt neglected. I’ve learned however that just because it hasn’t snowed doesn’t mean it won’t snow. And blow, and drift, and snow some more. To get the pictures I shot today, I first had to exit my front …

Fall on Mount Desert Island 2016

This fall on Mount Desert Island has been especially beautiful. The colors have been spectacular and the weather mild. The campus of the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor was the perfect place to capture the changing of the seasons. I shot all but the last three of these photos in the college garden using a Canon 5D Mark III DSLR and a Canon 135mm f/2 lens wide open. For the rest I …

La Rochelle

La Rochelle is a beautiful and elaborate “cottage” on West Street in Bar Harbor. Built in 1902 for George S. Bowdoin, a great-grandson of Alexander Hamilton and a partner in the Morgan Bank, the mansion was named after the Bowdoin family’s ancestral town in France. The most recent owners, Ruth and Tristram Colket, donated the structure to the Maine Sea Coast Mission in 1972 …

The Callender House and Highseas

Architect Fred Savage of Mount Desert Island designed The Callender House (large image below) and Highseas. Today the Jackson Lab owns these former homes, both located on the Schooner Head Road just outside of Bar Harbor. The JAX allowed the MDI Photo Club to photograph both structures for our March outing. The Callender House (1901) was the first summer cottage built of brick in Bar …

Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh welcomed me for a late February business trip. While there I had a chance to roam the city and walk across some of its fantastic historic steel bridges. The Andy Warhol bridge took me right to the Andy Warhol Museum which prides itself on being the global keeper of Andy Warhol’s legacy. The museum has seven floors of drawings, prints, paintings, sculpture, film and video, and …

Tesla Charging Station on Swans Island

I picked one of the coldest days of the year to travel out to Swans Island to photograph my friend Colleen’s new Tesla charging station at her Harbor Watch Inn. We thought it would be fun to take a picture and write a press release to promote electric vehicles and inn. It was fun, but it was damn cold. How cold was it? The thermometer at my house read -2F, but I think it warmed into single …

Jennifer Booher

In January of 2015, Jennifer Booher set out to circumambulate the shoreline of Mount Desert Island, hiking below the high tide line wherever possible. As she walks, Jenn studies the history, geology, and living things she encounters along the way. Later she writes about them on the Coast Walk section of her website jenniferbooher.com. There you can also see beautiful still life images she …
