Southwest Harbor, Maine in February

Posted by on Feb 16, 2014 in Places

Southwest Harbor is located on the "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island (MDI). "Quiet" is a term relative to the east side of the island where you'll find Bar Harbor and some of the most popular spots in Acadia National Park. During the "high season" months of July and August, the east side is very busy and hoppin' place. In summer, the west side has plenty of activity too, but many visitors to Acadia and MDI never make it over this way.

In mid-winter the entire island is pretty quiet on a Sunday morning, especially after a snow storm. I shot all the photos below at locations that are 15 minutes or less walking distance from my house in Southwest Harbor. I took a similar walk in January and posted those photos here. The trees in the large forest image below are on a footpath between Herrick Road and South Causeway Lane. Many thanks to the landowner who allows the public to walk through these beautiful woods which, on this day, were magical.
